<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I attended the Building learning Communities Conference last year and found Michael Fullan's keynote intriguing. He suggests that we should look at research evidence to hone our leadership skills to be purposeful and strategic.</span></div>
<div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What do you think about Michael Fullan's three key impacts on deeper learning and learning outcomes? </span><br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Teaching and pedagogy</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Collaborative culture</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Technology as an accelerator</span></li>
</ul>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">What does that look like in your school and our district? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">How can we use technology as an 'accelerator'?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RTEcIl41BFU/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RTEcIl41BFU?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Good teachers strive everyday for the same thing: We want to challenge our students so each one is able to reach his or her full potential. So how do we do that?</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well one way would be to make the tests harder so fewer students get 20/20. You could teach to the highest level student in the class and hope the rest of the class rise to the challenge. That's great teaching, right?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many experts agree that the traditional model where the teacher delivers the content and the students take a test or quiz to demonstrate their learning, has become outdated, as the main teaching style in a unit. It does not matter if those tests are tough and only a few students get all the answers correct or i</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">f the teacher uses a PowerPoint to deliver the content</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">, the power of information changes everything. We need to ask ourselves, is this traditional style of teaching still our goal? Is it still great teaching?</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We need to consider the culture of teaching and learning and ask ourselves the question: What do we consider to be great teaching here in Westford? </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Alan November suggests in this video, that great teachers in the digital age:</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Learn how to give students more responsibility for and control of their learning </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Show students how they learn themselves as a teacher </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Teach students to think critically on the Internet embedded in subject areas</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Publish student work to a global audience</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Give students purpose for learning (the purpose is not a grade)</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; color: black; font-family: Times; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 1; word-spacing: 0px;">
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I would suggest, that 21st century project-based learning and blended learning are two ways that we can use technology to support our goal of challenging all students.</span></div>
<div style="margin: 0px;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Is this too 'pie in the sky' or is this achievable? </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes, I really think it is achievable! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It will take time and the willingness to reflect on our culture of teaching and learning in the Westford Public Schools. The question is: Are we up for the challenge?</span></div>

<b>Who Owns the Learning?</b></div>
</div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is the key question that <a href="http://novemberlearning.com/educational-services/educational-consultants/alan-november/" style="color: #6699cc; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Alan November</a>, an internationally recognized </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">leader in education technology, asks about 21st century learning. </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">He argues that before we add more technology into the classrooms, we need to look at the culture of teaching and learning. </span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Does this apply to school districts with a long and strong record of academic excellence I wonder? Given our MCAS and SAT results here in Westford, we must be providing high quality teaching to our students. So why do we need to change anything?</span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, Alan believes that the culture of teaching and learning needs to change in all schools and the reason is not connected to test scores. 'We have a lot of kids who are over confident in their use of technology.' In this video he provides examples of what he means by this. He refers to: </span></div>
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">

<ul style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px; margin: 0.5em 0px; padding: 0px 2.5em;">
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Global empathy skills </span></li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The necessity of thinking critically about information</span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The need for teachers and students to understand how to design searches that offer results from multiple perspectives </span></li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The neced to redesign assignments so the answers are not able to be Googled or found in <a href="https://www.wolframalpha.com/" style="color: #6699cc; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">WolframAlpha </a></span></li>
<li style="border: none; margin: 0px 0px 0.25em; padding: 0px; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The critical need for students to learn how to ask creative questions</span></li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">According to Alan November, the traditional classroom where the focus is the transfer of content from the teacher to the student is out-dated by the age of the Internet and the power of information.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;" /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So when we are planning our 21st century, technology infused classrooms, we need to firstly consider the culture of teaching and learning. We should ask ourselves: </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14.8500003814697px; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">Who owns the learning in our classrooms? </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /><br />I’m relatively new to Westford Public Schools, but one thing that immediately stands out to me, is that we do not blindly follow popular educational trends. Before we dive into new initiatives, we consider what’s best for students and learning outcomes, while spending taxpayer funds as judiciously as possible. In my opinion this is a very good thing and is one of the reasons Westford was recently named by <a href="http://www.westfordtemplate.com/2014/10/westford-schools-best-bang-for-your-buck-according-to-website/">Nerdwallet </a>as the “Best School System For Your Buck in Massachusetts.” <br /><br /><b>How does this impact our transition to a Digital Learning Environment?</b><br />It means we will not jump into a Digital Learning initiative which focuses primarily on putting computers on students desks. We will start by considering learning outcomes and research the best ways to support student learning with technology, so we can achieve our learning objectives. Our approach is not a quick fix. Some may want things to move more quickly and get devices into the classrooms sooner. We are committed to increasing the number of devices in our schools as quickly as possible, based on our Vision for Digital Learning and available funding.<br /><br />You can feel reassured that Westford is not alone in our approach. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<a name='more'></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many experts agree with us including <a href="http://novemberlearning.com/educational-services/educational-consultants/alan-november/">Alan November</a>. In this article <a href="http://novemberlearning.com/educational-resources-for-educators/teaching-and-learning-articles/why-schools-must-move-beyond-one-to-one-computing/">“Why Schools Must Move Beyond 1:1 Computing”</a> , Alan argues against focusing on devices in 1:1 initiatives. “Adding a digital device to the classroom without a fundamental change in the culture of teaching and learning will not lead to significant improvement. Unless clear goals across the curriculum—such as the use of math to solve real problems—are articulated at the outset, one-to-one computing becomes “spray and pray.”<br /><br />Our Vision for Digital Learning here in Westford does just that. It focuses on the culture of teaching and learning. Our <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/21digitallearning/technology-plan">Digital Learning Plan</a> is our roadmap to achieving our vision. I think it’s a fabulous plan (but I am a little biased). The plan includes our vision, goals, timelines and action plans that clearly clarify what we need to do to be successful. More importantly, it identifies how we can review our progress towards our goals, and gather data that will help us make modifications to keep us on course. We will not be blindly following the plan without reviewing how we are doing.<br /><br />So stay tuned for the next post. I will be discussing our progress so far towards our Digital Learning Plan goals, particularly the professional development that we have implemented. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3974773544044586702.post-3677989507933987912014-08-17T11:48:00.000-04:002015-04-24T09:16:26.785-04:00<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We want more! <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">That is the overall theme of feedback from the this year's Summer Institute. We could all feel the excitement and energy that developed through the day. So what is it that everyone is getting so excited about?</span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
Believe it or not: educational leadership in the digital age. On Wednesday the leadership team had our eyes opened to the potential that Web 2.0 tools and social media offer. Now we want to grab hold of the possibilities and run with it.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;">
The highlight of the day and what everyone was so excited about, was the presentation by <a href="https://twitter.com/patrickmlarkin" target="_blank">Patrick Larkin,</a> <a href="http://www.patrickmlarkin.com/" target="_blank">Assistant Superintendent of Burlington Public Schools,</a> <span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">who spoke about </span><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Burlington's journey: </span><a href="http://edtechteacher.org/keynotes/patrick-larkin/" target="_blank">Social Media as a Powerful Tool.</a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> </span></div>
